Coach Debra Eustace said team members have spent a lot of time ploughing through geography and history books, encyclopedias and the internet in preparation.

“I have been so proud of the students who have spent many lunchtimes and much of their holidays researching the 11 United Nations resolutions preparing 22 different sets of notes to debate from the points of view of their different countries,” she said.

Last July the students were honoured to be guests of the Turkish and Greek embassies in Canberra working with the ambassadors to help them prepare for this prestigious competition.

This is Boorowa Central School’s fifth time competing at Nationals levels however it is the first time two teams have represented it.

The Turkish team of Gabrielle Hewitt, Harmony Joe Mewburn and Jonathan Morgan is sponsored by Boorowa Rotary and the Greek team of Madeline Hanns and Kimberly Taylor is sponsored by Rotary Lake Burley Griffin.

The United Nations resolutions to be debated include conflicts in Africa, Syria and Israel, environmental concerns such as agricultural and food sustainability, climate change and new energies, robotics and war, women’s advocate Malala Yousafzai’s education resolution and self determination for French Polynesia.

The competition begins next Friday August 16 and continues until Sunday 1pm.

The weekend part of the event is open to the public and the teams would very much appreciate members of the Boorowa community coming to watch and give support.
