Racing at Inverell for first time since New Year

INVERELL Jockey club will hold their first race meeting of the season tomorrow following a long, dry spell for on-course punters that has lasted since New Year’s Day.

It will be a five race program for which there have been 73 acceptances, which club secretary Leanne Brown said is pretty good for the August meeting.

If the excitement of the racing not be enough for any extreme sports fanatics in the crowd, this year the club will be running a special feature race that is sure to provide plenty of interest and lots of laughs.

“Also on the day we will be having what we call the ‘Beer Steeplechase Challenge,” Brown said.

“We’re inviting teams from the community and organisations to come up and participate.

“Entrants will have to hurdle hay bales carrying a full schooner of beer and that will be measured at the end of each leg.

“The winner will be determined by a calculation between measurement of contents and time.

“Top Of the Town have come on board to sponsor that race with a night out at their restaurant for the winning team.”

Brown said nominations are still open for the challenge, which will have its heats run between races and the final battled out following the last race on the card.

The first race is due to leave the barriers at 2.05pm and gates will open at 11am for the city races.

There will be TAB facilities and bookmakers on-course.

“It will be a very entertaining day if we get some nominations for the challenge; David Fox mentioned the meeting on Tuesday in the Times, so perhaps he should be challenged,” Brown said with a laugh.

LAST APPEARANCE: Seen here on Diggers Cup Day last year, Jewel Passport will run her final race at Inverell on Staurday before she is retired by her syndicate of owners and trainer John Berger.
